Today's educators are under-prepared for the changing technology that is used by their students daily. Students have access to technology at their fingertips and utilize it in many different ways in order to communicate with friends and family, assist them with school projects, for work and for play. This unevenness in the use of technology as it applies to educators and students is causing gap, affecting positive student achievement. This gap prevents the growth and progress in our educational systems because there is not enough "buy in" from the administrators and policy-makers to implement the technology needed to improve instructional practices and learning outcomes.

Diffusion of Innovations (DoI)
Diffusion of Innovations is a theory seeks to explain how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread through certain social systems. Everett Rogers, a professor of rural sociology, popularized the theory in his 1962 book Diffusion of Innovations. Here is a short video introducing the concepts of Diffusion of Innovations.
Technology assists with engaging and motivating students to construct their own ways of learning various topics and subject matters in classrooms across the nation. As educational technology leaders, we can influence educators to become more engaged and motivated to develop and deliver their curriculum utilizing technology. This will require to synthesizing core educational theories, models and adopting best practices for an enriched professional development (PD) plan at our school or district. A deeper understanding of the Diffusion of Innovations (DoI) model will assist with the creation of your own PD as it relates to how innovations are adopted and the various stages it is adopted into ones teaching practice.
